Fall in Love With the Bible

If you are a Christian, you need to fill yourself with the teachings of the Bible.  Doing this can be a hard and laborious process— unless you fall in love with the Bible.

How do you fall in love with the Bible?

You understand the powerful themes of the Bible and how they involve YOU!

At its core, the Bible is a LOVE STORY about a King and His citizens.  God placed man on earth to rule over His earthly domain.  But something happened.  Through treachery man lost control of the Kingdom.  The Bible is about a Heavenly King and what He did to recapture the Kingdom and restore man to it.

What did the King do?  The answer to that question involves you.  The Bible takes the greatest story ever told and shows you how it applies to your life.

That the King of Kings cares about you has been reflected in literature throughout history.

One popular theme is the “king in disguise”.  In this theme, a king conceals himself in disguise uncovering injustice as he walks among his people.

This theme can be seen in the movie A Knight’s Tale.

The King

That the King of Kings (God) came to man in disguise can be seen in scripture:

Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: But made himself of no reputation, and TOOK UPON THE FORM OF A SERVANT, and was made in the likeness of men: And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.

Philippians 2:5-8

By observing Christ in scripture we learn many things about ourselves and our situation.

We learn that our story isn’t just about ourselves.  We learn that it’s actually part of a larger story— God’s Story.

God’s story is one of reconciliation.  It’s that God, through Christ, is reconciling the world to Himself (2 Corinthians 5:19).

When we understand this, we come to realize that God is often redeeming us from our own personal stories as they collide with His higher purposes.

Could it be that through all our pain, God really cares about us?  That His glory and our well being are part of the same script?

As we become more and more sure of this, we fall in love with the Bible and it’s KING.  We realize that the Bible is an adventure.  It involves us in a Sacred Romance.

This romance is a story of the heart.  It’s a fairy tale, except with one major difference— it’s TRUE.

In his book Telling the Truth: The Gospel as Tragedy, Comedy and Fairy Tale, Fredrick Buechner writes:

It is a world of magic and mystery, of deep darkness and flickering starlight.  It is a world where terrible things happen and wonderful things too.  It is a world where goodness is pitted against evil, love against hate, order against chaos, in a great struggle where it’s hard to be sure who belongs to which side because appearances are endlessly deceptive.  Yet for all its confusion and wildness, it is a world where the battle goes ultimately to the good, to those who live happily ever after, and where in the long run everybody good and evil alike becomes known by their true name.  It is the fairy tale of the Gospel with, of course, one crucial difference from all other fairy tales— it is true.  It not only happened once upon a time, but has kept on happening ever since and is happening still.

Buechner reminds us that we live in a “world where terrible things happen and appearances are endlessly deceptive.”  For this reason, God gave us the Bible.  It is a light to our path (Psalm 119:105).  Those who trust in it and the King— fear no evil.

King David writes:

Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.  Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.  Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.

Psalm 23:4-6

Now fall in love with the Bible.  Let it change you so you can change the world.
